JesterN, aka Alberto Novello explores the relationship between light and sound in the form of installations and performances. An important part of his work is analog instruments, which he restores and modifies.
Using devices from the past like oscilloscopes, early game consoles, old generations of video mixers and lasers, JesterN shows the audience the aesthetic differences between the ubiquitous digital projections and the brightness of analog beams. In this way, viewers are engaged in thinking about what “old” means and what value the “new” actually adds.
The time-slowing installation Blacklight X was originally created on the occasion of the 125th anniversary of Dutch artist Marius Escher. In contrast to the “frenzied” but precise movements of the ultraviolet laser, the light-sensitive surface will slowly reveal structures with minute details reminiscent of cities, forests, alien architecture and abstract worlds. As in many of JesterN's recent works, the movement of the laser will be directed by sound signals, creating a synaesthetic interaction: what is seen will coincide with what is heard.
